Martensitic stainless steel requires specific furnaces. There are numerous objects and components that can be produced with the furnaces for martensitic stainless steel: knives, blades, cutting tools, turbine blades etc. can be realized with FE-Cr-C stainless steel. The hardening process takes place with a slow speed of cooling, simply suspending heating, and therefore shutdown with cooling liquid is not required. Martensitic stainless steel is an air-hardening steel.
The hardening process can be followed by distension between 430° and 570°C. Higher temperatures can provoke a sudden drop in toughness and resistance to corrosion (fragility of tempering).
This heat treatment can be performed inside chamber or continuous furnaces, with or without different types of controlled atmospheres according to the various applications.
